The therapeutic relationship is a confidential one, meaning that your therapist will not share with others the information addressed and disclosed in therapy. There are some exceptions to this confidentiality. With written consent from the client or legal guardian if the client is under the age of 18, your therapist may disclose information information to others. If during the course of therapy there are threats of harm towards oneself or someone else, then your therapist has the right to disclose that information without the client's or legal guardian's consent. If there is suspected abuse or neglect, by law your therapist has to report that to the Department of Social Services. In Some legal instances to ensure the proper administration of justice, your therapist may be required to disclose information without client or legal guardian consent.
